An assortment of items are often left to the side near the front door of a home. Items such as keys usually find themselves having a home in the form of a key rack or box. However, other items such as toques, mittens, scarves, lettermail, etc can sometimes lack a specific and convenient place. This wall-mounted furniture can hold onto your keys and other small pieces of clothing, letters, and other things you might need to take with you or keep at the door for reference.

The holder can feature bands of alternating colors that have their default positions at the 12 o’clock, 5 o’clock, and 7 o’clock positions. Each band can be shifted towards either one of the other positions.

The “pucks” at the ends of each band keep the bands in place on the backboard and allow for keys to be hanged on their pegged-end. FDM Printing was utilized in order to create lightweight pucks that would not force the bands out of their intended resting positions, and also allow for interesting face designs through the use of infill modifiers.

If you'd like to build something like this at home…

The following is a build list of the materials and items that I used:

QTYItemWhere to purchase
1

¾" Baltic Birch

Note: Though I chose to use birch for the backboard, you can get creative and use anything you'd like. The only critical element of the design is the position of the circular mounting puck areas and thickness (find these in attached technical drawing pdf). Aside from this, how your backboard looks can be all up to you!

Your local home improvement store or woodshop.

½ Inch Grommets

1

1" knit elastic band. Cut to 19cm length.

Mounting Pucks w/pegs

File attached, print them out yourself!

Other building notes:

Ensure there is a ¾" gap between the edges of the mounting board and the wall so that the pucks can slit in nicely. I used a cleave at the back to mount the board in place.

Mounting pucks:

  • There is enough friction between the male/female part of the puck where you do not need any adhesive to keep them together. The can be separated to allow for the swapping of elastic bands. Pictures above give a better understanding.
  • Lower layer heights of <0.2mm will virtually eliminate need for supports on the keychain pegs.

Elastic Bands:

  • One grommet should be placed at each end of cut elastic band (see pics for reference)
  • Adding support fabric underneath the grommets on the elastic band will increase their hold and prevent grommets from sliding out of elastic hole.
