Canning Jar Filter Coupler

For some herbs and essential oils, it is desirable to keep the temperature below freezing to prevent undesirable components getting into the tincture.  Since filtering often takes hours, I created this device to allow putting the entire apparatus in the freezer during this step - thus preventing the alcohol from warming up and contaminating the mixture.

Take care on your filament choice - you don't want plastic residues in a product you plan to consume.  I chose Taulman Nylon 680 Medical-grade filament.  Can't say for sure it is safe so proceed at your own risk but it seemed to be the “safest” that I could find.  I also washed mine with Everclear before using just to remove any oils that might be present.

Note:  It is drawn to actual dimensions so make sure to compensate for any shrinkage you encounter.  I experienced significant (0.5%) shrinkage when using Nylon (maybe not dry enough) so had to scale all three axis to 100.5% prior to slicing to get the correct final dimensions.

You will need two canning jars: 1 large-mouth and 1 small mouth.  To use, fold the coffee filter into a cone and place over the small mouth jar containing your solution.  Screw the coupler onto the small-mouth jar over the filter and then screw the large mouth jar upside-down onto it.  Quickly invert to start filtering and place in the freezer if desired.  Might be wise to place a pan below in case of leaks although I have not encountered any.
