This is a iPad holder originally intended to put my iPad on my rowing machine and way over engineered. It is split into two parts so it should be no problem to create an adapter for it to use somewhere else.

It's basically a first step to your own magic keyboard.

The holder is quite thin and also a little wobbly, because I wanted to keep the print time down. You can add filler elements in PrusaSlicer or add more stabilization with mash mixer or what ever tool you prefer. The iPad holds quite strong, but of cause I don't provide any warranties.

It uses 26 4x4mm cylindric magnets for Example:

This are about half the magnets apple uses, but I wanted to be sensible and also if the magnets are to tight together its gonna be very hard to print and place the magnets.

Print at 0,2mm

PETG (PLA should work as well)

Attention: This print needs at least the Print size of a mk3 or bigger. Even the standard skirt does not fit around, but you can change the skirt distance to 0,6mm and it will fit the mk3. You can cut of the left and right a little, but it then will not be smooth around the edges of the iPad.

Instruction

  1. Print the helper elements
  2. Place the helper on the iPad and put the magnets in each hole. The holes are a little tighter then the actual stand and they should stay in the helper elements. This is necessary because the magnets in the iPad are differently orientated.
  3. Print the iPad holder and add a print break at 4,4mm
  4. when the printer pauses, place the helper elements on to the holes of the iPad holder and use a small not magnetic screwdriver and slightly push the magnets in. They should actually plop in easily, because the print sheet is magnetic as well.
  5. Continue printing.
  6. Print a fitting adapter or use mine, if you want to use it for a rowing machine

If there is interest, I could refine the design further, I didn't look into it for a while but I'm happy to help. I added a picture of my process of placing the magnets. I used a magnetic foil, took a photo and aligned it in a 3D program and placed the holes for the magnets. I did try other magnets and also had lots of small test prints.

I have just an 11" iPad to test it, but it should be compatible with iPad Pro 11" 2018, 2020 and 2021 as well as the iPad Air 4th and 5th generation.
