This is a 3d printed case for Aidan Lawrence's excellent Throwback Operator, which is an OPL3 music player, using a real Yamaha YMF262 chip and an STM32 as the controller/player.

After putting mine together, I really wanted to have a portable player to use at work, so I designed this case up in Fusion 360.

Printing the body & volume wheel:

The case body and the volume wheel work well with 0.2mm layer height using the 0.4mm nozzle, no supports required.

Note that my build used a chinese clone of the RK097 volume dial, so you might need a different volume dial if you've got the proper Alps volume dial.

Printing the buttons:.

The buttons need a 0.25mm nozzle to get the nice detail for the play/shuffle icons, but are still printable with a 0.4mm nozzle. The buttons file is included as a .3mf so that it includes the pause in the print, where you can switch from one filament colour to another.

In my print, the lower part uses black PLA filament, with a switch to Prusament Silver PLA on top to make the buttons look nice.

Putting it together:

  1. Once it's all printed, put the top case face down and drop in the buttons
  2. Slide in the player by putting the volume dial through its hole first and drop / fit the player into the top shell
  3. Put on the lower case and close it with M2.5 8mm screws
  4. Fit the volume dial into place
  5. Enjoy :)
