Why I made this:

  • I use a Rollo X1040 thermal label printer to print shipping labels at work.

  • I realized that you can buy thermal labels in all shapes, sizes, and colors, so I started using it to print stickers as well!

  • I got one of the generic Amazon 4x6 label holders that came with a spool, but it was annoying to take the spool holder out each time. So then I made this swing-arm mod which I used for quite a while, but it was kind of a bodge.

  • So here's an all-in-one station!

Why this is cool:

  • Everything is nice and compact

  • 4x6 labels live under the printer

  • Swing-arm spool holder for circular core labels (with magnetic docking!)

  • Auxiliary roller for gentler feed path when using the top spool holder

  • Pockets for drawers for additional office supplies (not yet designed in R01, coming soon)

  • Base has countersinks for #8 wood screws to attach this to a table or board

Here's what you'll need besides the printed parts:

  • 8x M5 x 14 mm thread forming FHCS

    • These are used to attach the printer cradle to the base (4 screws) and to attach the posts to the base (2x 2 screws each)

      • McMaster 95893A247 or equivalent

      • You might be able to just send it with M5 x 14 flat head machine screws, but you also might want to change the pilot hole size in the model accordingly

  • 1x M5 x 25 SHCS 

    • McMaster 91292A129 or equivalent

    • This is used as the spool arm pivot.

    • I just tapped the hole in the post and drove the screw into it, so far it's holding up.

    • You could always use a thread forming screw for this or drill out the pilot hole and use a heat set insert if you'd like

  • (optional) 2x 6 mm OD x 3 mm T magnet

    • These are used to help keep the spool arm docked

    • To be honest, gravity + the friction of the interface actually holds the arm just fine... so let's say these are optional

  • (optional) 4x #8 wood screws if you're mounting this to something

  • (optional) If you want to use smaller-than-spec labels (I print tiny barcodes with my printer), I suggest also printing these adapters

Here's how to put it together (there's also an assembly guide PDF with screenshots):

Print your parts! Hopefully the print orientation is obvious for each part. Nothing needs supports.

  1. Maybe put some grease in the pockets for the 'auxiliary roller'. Or don't! Up to you.

  2. Put the auxiliary roller into the posts and nestle the posts into their mounting spots

  3. Attach the posts to the 4x6 base with 2x M5 FHCS thread forming screws per post

  4. Attach the printer base to the 4x6 base with 4x M5 FHCS thread forming screws

  5. Install 1x 6mm OD x 3mm T magnet in the spool arm - I recommend a drop of glue.

  6. Install 1x 6mm OD x 3mm T magnet in the docking post with a drop of glue as well (make sure you get the polarity right!)

  7. Tap the back hole for a M5 screw (or just send it, up to you)

  8. Install pivot screw (M5 x 25 SHCS)

  9. (optional) Use 4x #8 wood screws to mount the station to a desk or board. You might need to remove the printer cradle first. Or maybe I'll modify the printer cradle to let you access those mounting holes after the fact...

Potential changelog/improvements ahead:

  • Expand the holes in the 4x6 base so that you can drop the M5 FHCS straight up from the bottom instead of fishing them around

    • Update: fixed in 260430 R02

  • Expand the mounting holes for the Rollo feet so that you can access the desk mounting holes even with the printer cradle installed

    • Update: fixed in 260430 R02

  • Make the drawers

    • Update: added with 260430 R02
