Apple wired EarPods have an absolutely incredible microphone. Like, astoundingly good for $20. Crisp, close to your mouth, no codec overhead, no compression. Everyone on the other end of the call feels like they're talking to a real person right next to them. The problem is that EarPods don't have ANC, I find them uncomfortable after 20 minutes, and you have a wire getting tangled up around you.
So the obvious answer is AirPods Pro. They have the best ANC on the market, are comfortable enough to forget you're wearing them, and are wireless. However, the microphone sucks! It sits at the bottom of a stem, far away from your mouth, affecting signal-to-noise ratio by picking up everything in the room before it picks up you. Apple throws computational audio at the problem and it helps, but it also makes your voice sound processed and thin. And if someone else is talking even somewhat nearby to you (like let's say, in an office?), good luck having clear audio.
For a long time a tradeoff felt unavoidable: either wear EarPods and sound great but lose out on major quality of life features, or wear AirPods that are comfortable and convenient, but have a mid mic at best.
This STL is the fix. It's a small cap that snugly slides onto/off your AirPods Pro 3 stem and has a through-hole sized to accept the snipped USB-C end of an EarPods cable. You print the stem, snip off the drivers on a pair of $20 EarPods, then lock the snipped wires in place with a dab of hot glue. When you need to take calls, you attach the stem to your AirPods and have a crystal clear mic, with a headset that looks completely stock on camera. When you aren't talking calls, you put away the wire until next time.
For those who think audio quality matters (it does), this gives you the best of both worlds. You get AirPods ANC, comfort, portability, and the legendary EarPods mic when it actually counts.
