Motivation for this Design

There are many smartphone stands available, either for purchase or for printing. However, you rarely find the perfect fit for your phone. Even if you choose a model which was designed for your phone, it may not work when using a cover. Additionally, many printable phone stands consume a lot of material. Therefore, I tried to design a phone stand that is

  • customizable to the exact dimensions of your phone (with our without cover),
  • saving material and
  • easy to print (without supports).

How to Use the Model

Required Settings

Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD and activate the customizer ("Window" menu). There are four categories for parameters. For the basic design you only need “Basic parameters”.

Basic Parameters
ParameterDescription
draftthis should be unchecked once you have finalized your settings before you generate the final rendering and the .stl file
vertical spacedefines the height of the back rest (see picture)
horizontal spacedefines the distance between front part and back support (see picture)
base lengthdefines the length of the base (see picture)

If you create a custom model you have to consider some rules: The vertical space should be enough to prevent your phone from falling over - half of your phone length is a good estimate.

The horizontal space defines how much you phone will lean back, depending on you line of sight. This can vary, e.g. if you have your phone stand on a desk or on a shelf.

Base length supports your phone stand and needs to be long enough to prevent the complete phone stand from falling over. The combination of vertical space and base length also defines the angle of the curve on the back side. This should be above 45 degrees if you want to print the model standing upright.

Tray width should be approx. as wide as your phone. You can choose a smaller width to save some material and your phone should still fit properly.

Optional Settings

All the following settings can be altered if you want to change further parameters of the smartphone stand.

Advanced Parameters
ParameterDescription
thicknessdefines the thickness of the material in mm
tray lengthdefines the length of the front part
tray angleadd more degrees here beyond 90 to have the tray bend inside
arc radiusthe radius of the front and back curve
Material Parameters

Here you can define if you want the base plate to be a frame structure and if you want the back part to be smaller than the front part. Both options save material when printing, but they won't allow you to print the model laying on its side.

ParameterDescription
cutout factorportion of material removed from base, set to 0 for solid base
base shrinkwidth reduction of back support, set to 1 for continuous width
Smarthphone Model for Testing

If you active the box here, a red box in the shape of the given paramters is included in the model to visualize how a smartphone would fit in the stand.

Print Settings

I printed my model on a PRUSA Mini+ using PLA with more or less standard settings and 15% infill. The print time is approx. 2 hrs and 50 min and the filament consumption is 27 g and the cost esimation is 0,67 €.

The standard model with cutout base and smaller back rest has to be printed in a standing position. You have to make sure that the angle of the back rest is larger than 45 degrees.

I recommend to print the full size model without cutout on the side.
