Here is my version of the universal small narrow-gauge diesel often known as a “critter”. This model was designed to be printed on an FDM printer with a standard 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.12 mm layer height and all parts are designed to be printed flat with no support. Also, this model is designed for use on either the Bachmann N scale MDT or the Kato 11-109 chassis

Tips for printing:
Print the body as well as the frame that fits your selected chassis and 4 pilot steps. If you are using the kato mechanism I’ve included optional sideframes to disguise the chassis. I’ve also included a universal sideframe if you wish to use just the frame and build your own body on top. The body prints upright, the frames upside down, and the steps and sideframes print flat. (I’ve attached a picture of how I orient my parts.)

Assembly:
What you’ll need: Printed components, Bachmann N scale MDT or Kato 109 mechanism, paint, super glue, small file or sand paper (just in case of fitment issues), and any additional detail parts you want to add.

For the Bachmann MDT, the frame slides over the mechanism and the body glues on top of the frame. Glue the pilot steps to the ends of the frame with the longer side sticking outward. Note: the printed sideframes will not work with the MDT chassis and frame.

For the Kato 109, the frame slides over mechanism and locks into the tabs on the top. The sideframes glue to lip on the side of the frame. Note: for the Davenport sideframes one step is offset to line up with cab. If you are using the universal sideframes print two of these, but the steps will not line up with the provided body. Like the MDT the body glues to the frame and the pilot steps glue to each end.

Final notes:
While this is the simplest of my designs this one is the nearest to my heart. This was the first model I’ve ever designed and printed and it dates all the way back to 2016, hence the Bachmann chassis. The models pictured are my personal painted models, the blue one is on a Bachmann chassis while the grey one is on the Kato chassis.
If you have any comments, questions, suggestions, or funny remarks feel free to reach out to me. As always, I hope to be sharing more of my models in the future and if you have any suggestions for models you’d like to see in HOn30 let me know.

Best Regards,
Dr. Fixet
