I have struggled to find a good spool holder for my 6.3L cereal drybox. Everything was either too wide, or needed to be adjusted for different spools. This fits the widest spools I have, at least.

Printed in PLA. There are supports required under the center spool rods on the endstops for the bearings. These are painted on in the 3mf file and are very easy to remove.

There is a riser and bearings included in the 3mf file, these are optional. You can use real 608 bearings although the printed ones work just as well here.

The riser has holes for M3 screws/nuts. You can use these to secure it, but I have not found it necessary, it just sits loose at the bottom of the box.

FreeCAD files are included.

Parts

  1. Rod end (4): The shorter cylindrical parts with the protruding, split-end pins.
  2. Rod center (2): The longer cylindrical parts that are the same on both ends.
  3. Bearing holder (4): The mostly flat pieces with the large bearing-sized hole.
  4. Base (1): The flat piece with various notches.
  5. Riser (1): The piece with four legs.
  6. Bearings (4): The round things with the little pegs inside. (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2746804. These are the “tight” bearings)

Assembly

  1. Grease the bearings. I used Super Lube Part 21030.
  2. Snap the bearing holders into the base. The flat part with the hole faces outside. The edges of the bottom should be flush to the base.
  3. Insert bearings into the bearing holders. They should be centered.
  4. Hold the rod center between the two bearings.
  5. Insert a rod end into each end of the rod center. It should snap into place when fully inserted, and there should be little clearance between the center, bearing holders, and end (the gap between end and center is 2mm)
  6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other side.
  7. Place the riser pegs into the bottom of the base.
