PDF

This is a wearable, fully articulated late medieval close helm. It was modelled with reference to the helmets made by Pompeo della Cesa, a Milanese armour maker, circa 1585. It is fully articulated, breathable, and wearable, and has relatively good vision while closed, while also being light and strong.

Assembly

To assemble this helm, connect all left parts to their respective right hand partners, aligning and gluing/plastic welding them together. The front collar, once bonded, is then welded to the chin plate; the rear collar goes to the HelmLowerBack piece. Assemble the Helm components in a similar manner, aligning the guides and gluing. Once the components are assembled, the chinplate, lower visor and upper visor pivot on the Pivot pins which go through the holes in the side of the Helm. The three moving sections go in order, with chinplate going on first, upper visor in the middle and lower visor on top.

If using the larger parts, make two plastic welds along the seams connecting .helm and .neckback, and .chinpiece with .neckfront. All other parts pivot around the pivot pins, which slide into each other. Some glue is recommended in order to keep them together.

Optionally, small hidden magnets are used in order to keep the helmet closed. Two of these, paired with generic flat washers, are glued into the bottom corners of the helm part, with the washers glued to the .chinpiece, shutting the helmet around the neck. The other point was a magnet sunk into the front of .uppervisorplate using a hot iron, and another washer glued into the inside of .lowervisorplate, keeping those two together during use.

Fitting

This helmet is currently scaled to fit my head snugly. For reference, my head has a circumference of about 64 cm, and a width of about 17 cm. I would recommend printing .helm first, to make sure the final product will fit.

Splint

This is a prop to hold the helmet open for extended periods, and is entirely optional. It works well, and is sturdy.

Most prints will need supports. .neckfront and .neckback, or .frontcollarL/R and rearcollarL/R can be printed without supports.

Happy printing!
