Qasr al-Farid, meaning “the lonely castle” in Arabic, is the largest tomb in the archeological site of Hegra (Ancient Greek: Ἕγρα, Arabic: ٱلحجر, romanized: al-Ḥijr), also known as Mada’in Salih (Arabic: مدائن صالح), in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia. Hegra was the southernmost and second largest city of the Nabataean Kingdom after Petra (modern-day Jordan), which was its capital. The site features more than 110 well-preserved Nabataean tombs carved into sandstone outcrops, Qasr al-Farid is the most known and largest of these carved tombs.
In 2008, UNESCO proclaimed Mada'in Salih as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site (from Wikipedia).
