Vertical magnetic marble run on a white board.
Note: This is work in progress. I will keep adding new rails as I design it
You will need (TLDR):
- Magnetic Whiteboard
- Some 16mm wooden or 3D printed marbles
- Magnetic foil/sheet 80 g/cm2 + superglue
- plenty of PLA
You will need (Long version):
- Magnetic Whiteboard - It is quite expensive so you can probably use magnetic paint, but I have not tried it … or a fridge :)
- Marbles - The rails are designed for 16mm diameter marble. Glass is to heavy and moves the rails once it falls on it so I recommend either print it or use some wooden ones - eg https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32870768221.html
- Magnetic foil - Standard magnets are very string, but slide on on a board. Magnetic foil is much better because of larger sticking area. The adhesive on self-adhesive foils is usually not strong enough so I recommend a super-glue.!!! Magnetic force on some foils is not same on both sides so make sure you glue it correctly !!! I tested the following ones:
- 58 g/cm2 1.0mm - This one is not strong enough unless the sticking area is very large (https://www.unimagnet.cz/magneticka-folie-a4-1-0mm-natural_z664/)
- 80 g/cm2 1.0mm anisotropic - This one works great (https://www.unimagnet.cz/silna-magneticka-samolepici-folie-a4-tloustka-1-mm-anizotropni_z446/)
- 102 g/cm2 - 1.5mm - This one is so strong that it is difficult to move the rails so use only when the sticking area is small (https://www.unimagnet.cz/magneticka-samolepici-paska-30-mm-metraz_z783/)
- Print - Use any material you want. I try to design everything without supports printable with 0.25mm layer heigh
