⚠ IMPORTANT NOTICE

📦 The IKEA Samla 65L boxes come in two versions: Old Style and New Style.

  • This model was designed for the Old Style version, as shown in the pictures.
  • The inner width of the new version may differ, so I strongly recommend measuring your box’s internal dimensions before printing.

⚠Minimum internal dimensions required for this model:

  • Bottom horizontal width: 42.5 cm
  • Bottom vertical width: 30 cm
  • Height: ~40.5–40.6 cm
(Measurements taken without the lid — lid reduces inner height slightly.)
  • 🧭 All measurements are based on the inner bottom of the box.

🔩 MODEL FEATURES

  • Each rack holds 4 filament spools.
  • One rack system includes 2 shelves, allowing storage of 8 filaments.
  • Two rack systems fit inside the box, providing a total capacity of 16 filaments per box.
  • Each filament slot is 70 mm (7 cm) wide and 200mm(20cm) height.
  • The top shelf is removable for easy access to the lower shelf.
  • The top shelf includes 2 handle grips for convenience.
  • The bottom shelf is fixed for stability.
  • The vertical gap between shelves is 1.5 mm to prevent spools from rubbing against each other.

🧩 STABILIZER SYSTEM

To increase overall stability, I designed a set of stabilizer parts that connect directly into the side supports.
These stabilizers interlock between the left and right supports, keeping the entire rack system tightly aligned.

There are two versions of the stabilizer system:

  • Modular (multi-part) version: This version can be printed in smaller pieces and assembled later. I strongly recommend using super glue to bond the parts together securely.
  • One-piece version: Printed as a single solid piece for maximum strength and convenience (no gluing required).
  • They can be installed on either the upper or lower parts of the side supports — or both — depending on how much extra rigidity you want.
  • Each stabilizer is 10 mm thick, allowing it to fit snugly against the inner wall of the Samla box.
  • This tight fit prevents the rack from shifting or wobbling when the box is moved.
  • When installed, the stabilizers significantly improve the rigidity and side-to-side balance of the entire structure, keeping the filaments stable and perfectly aligned.

🧰 MODEL STORY

I originally used IKEA Samla 65L boxes to store my filament spools.
At first, I stacked them horizontally on top of each other. But one day, when I tried to grab a spool, they started sliding around and it drove me crazy. 😅

So, I started looking for a solution on MakerWorld and other 3D model platforms — but couldn’t find any model specifically made for the Samla 65L box.
At that point, I thought, “If it doesn’t exist, I’ll make it myself.”

🖨 PRINTING RECOMMENDATIONS

Some parts of this model require support structures.

  • I used PLA/PETG support filament with my printer for smoother surfaces.

If you don’t have a dedicated support filament, you can still achieve good results:

  • When printing with PLA, use PETG as the support material.
  • When printing with PETG, use PLA as the support material (if you have an AMS system).

📏 Build Volume Profiles:
I’ve provided two build size profiles based on different printer bed dimensions:

  • For printers with a 256×256×256 mm build volume
  • For larger printers capable of printing parts over 300 mm in length

Choose the appropriate version for your printer size to ensure a successful print and perfect fit.

🔧 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Watch the assembly video below for a full step-by-step guide.

Quick summary:

  • The model consists of two main parts — Bottom (B) and Upper (U).
  • The parts are press-fit, so you may need a bit of force to assemble them.
  • For extra stability, you can apply a small amount of super glue (avoid overapplying).
  • The clipped ends of the side supports fit into the bottom rack, while the flat ends connect to the top rack.
  • The two handle grips on the top shelf make it easy to lift and access the lower rack.

Stabilizer Installation:

  • Insert the stabilizer pieces into the holes located on the side supports.
  • You can attach them to the upper sectionlower section, or both, depending on how much rigidity you want.
  • There are two stabilizer versions available:
    • The modular (multi-part) version can be assembled using super glue — this is recommended for smaller printers or tighter tolerances.
    • The single-piece version doesn’t require gluing and provides maximum rigidity.
  • Each stabilizer is 10 mm thick, designed to fit snugly against the inner wall of the Samla box, preventing any side movement or wobbling.
