My mom had this "Boombox Rex" bluetooth speaker that broke. It turned out that connections on the inside had been disconnected, but unfortunately, I broke the enclosure when I opened it.

Thank goodness we have 3D printing! I decided to improve the sound quality by adding a 3 inch mid-range speaker, and gave it a new enclosure.

Electronics added to this design:

3 inch mid-range speaker mini-usb breakout board (Adafruit makes good ones) Extra wire and solder.

I basically rewired the device to add the second speaker and breakout board. If you are really curious, feel free to comment on this and I will explain in more detail. It was fairly easy to do (maybe 1.5 hours with little electronics experience).

After that I made an enclosure for the two speakers, the passive radiator that was in the original design, the button pad, and a usb port for charging the li-ion batteries inside.

I added the solidworks files as well so that you can edit it if you like.

Notes:

I used PLA for the front and nylon for the back.

NOTE - I highly advise against using nylon for this design as it is flexible and actually resonates sometimes during bass notes. Stick with a more rigid material like PLA or even ABS should work (although PLA will be way easier to print with).

Post-Printing

I simply used plastic epoxy to glue the speakers, radiator, button pad, and usb breakout into place. Then I applied some silicone caulking to the cracks to make sure it was sealed.

Four screw holes are located on the prints to screw the two together (I would recommend some glue as well in order to properly seal it.

Lastly, I used some black silicone caulk to seal the hexagon speaker from the front and make it look nicer.
