This is a project to help myself and others learn Japanese in a tactile way. The idea is to use a physical sensation to help anchor the knowledge in your mind, rather than rote memorization.

This is the numbers 1-10, with Kanji on the front, and Hiragana/Katakana on the back. Please see the notes for printing instructions.

The raised side is the side that you're trying to memorize, and the flat side is the side that you should know. The size and textures of the coins also make them well-suited for use as fidget toys.

The project is inspired by Thieves' Purse by Naomi "SexyCyborg" Wu, and can be used to play the game devised by her:

Without looking, players have to pick the correct "coins" out of a bag by feeling for the shape of the characters. Play begins with two coins. More coins are added each round.

24-9-19 UPDATE: Corrected "Juu" coin. Characters were incorrect.
