You know Benchy, right? That cute little calibration boat every 3D printer owner has made at least once. Well… this is the same Benchy, except it made a pact with Davy Jones, died horribly, and came back as the Flying Dutchman.

This isn’t just another remix. This is Benchy risen from the abyss: torn sails, spectral lanterns, and a green aura that would make even your slicer cry. It’s the ghost ship, perfect for Halloween, spooky desk décor, or simply flexing to your maker friends that you’ve fully embraced the dark side of PLA.

The Flying Dutchman Benchy doesn’t sail the seas… it sails straight into your nightmares. And it’s ready to haunt your 3D printer.

🖨 Printing Tips

  • Layer height: 0.20 mm
  • Material: ~50 g of PLA
  • Print time: ~4 hours
  • Supports: required

🎨 Painting Guide (Spooky Edition)

⚓ Hull and body

  • Base: print in white PLA, prime with neutral grey.
  • Main coat: dark grey with a hint of green.
  • Aging: use a black wash to darken cracks and simulate rotten wood.
  • Highlights: dry brush with light grey to bring out worn edges and texture.

⛵ Sails

  • Base: pale matte green.
  • Tears: darken the edges of holes with black wash.
  • Highlights: dry brush with white to give that tattered, spectral look.

🔥 Lanterns and glowing details

  • Lantern frames: paint in metallic grey.
  • Glass: fluorescent green/teal paint with a glossy finish for glowing effect.
  • Algae/slime: dab touches of the same fluorescent tones for continuity.

💨 Ghostly Aura (the fun part)

  • Use cotton wool or pillow stuffing pulled apart to form mist under the hull.
  • Lightly airbrush or spray with diluted green ink/acrylic to give a cursed glow.
  • Bonus trick: hide small green or teal LED tealights under the cotton for an epic undead vibe.

⚙ Pro tip – fixing the cotton

To keep the cotton in place long-term, use a thin layer of clear PVA glue or spray adhesive on the base. This prevents it from slipping off or gathering dust too easily, while still looking fluffy and natural.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

The classic Benchy is a cheerful little boat designed to test printers. This one is its cursed counterpart: cracked hull, torn sails, glowing lanterns, and even a smoky aura base. It’s no longer just a calibration model – it’s a full-blown PLA nightmare monument.
