The recent release of the USW Pro XG 8 POE has a lot of people excited due to it's small form factor with 8 10G-BaseT POE++ ports and 2 SFP+ ports.  However, the switch appears to run quite hot.  Idle temperatures with minimal ports connected are seen in the 70C-75C range.  It does have an internal fan that runs at 30% most of the time (even when under load).  It will ramp up during boot but drops back down.

Even if the manufacturer claims this may be normal operating temperature I, similar to other people, are concerned about the longevity running this hot.  Desktop Unifi switches are known to run hot due to their small form factor and poor air flow design, especially with 10GBase-T ports.  This switch is the hottest I have seen so far.

To accommodate a “cooler" running environment I have designed a desktop frame the switch can sit on while creating enough room underneath for a 120mm or 140mm Ñoctua 5V PWM fan (or any 5V PWM fan) to blow upwards.  The switch does not have many openings except for a narrow long slot in the bottom back of the device.  However, providing more airflow is better than less airflow.  Using the external fan control for the Noctua 5V PWM allows for customized duty cycle trading off higher temperature(s) for lower noise or vice versa.  Using this frame and a 140mm Noctua 5V PWM fan underneath with 30%-40% duty cycle the switch idles around 66C with several 1000BaseT ports, (1) 10GBase-T and (1) 10G-DAC connected.  Average room temperature ~25C

The switch has no side mounting holes like some of the regular size Unifi rack mount switches so I had to bridge the two side frames together with a back frame which is intended to be printed in one piece.  Using the provided cad file below the left, back and right frames and be exported individually if desired since they are three separate parts.  The little rectangle holes in the back are intended for cable routing options of the fan cables.

The power supply holder is 100% the same file and object from when I created the original Unifi XG 6 POE power supply holder.  As soon as I saw the power supply adapter for this switch I recognized the dimensions and sure enough they were the same.  To see more details on this object please see the following link: https://www.printables.com/model/979100-unifi-xg-6-poe-power-supply-holder

    • I use the Smart Fill option and ensure the inside is supported.  When I printed the original object on my old MK3S+ I did not need supports but with the. MK4 and MMU3 I now need them.
    • Top contact Z distance: .12 mm
    • Pattern Angle: 45 degrees

    • XY Separation: 75%
