After attending an ISLE workshop, I thought it would be fun to design some vector arrows such that they could change length. Here is the design I cam up with! The design includes an embedded magnet, which should be inserted before the print finishes. Magnets come in different sizes, the models use magnets as described in the file name, specifically:

  • 10 mm x 5 mm x 2 mm (smallest, weakest, but also cheapest)
  • 10 mm x 5 mm x 3 mm
  • 12 mm x 5 mm x 3 mm (shown in the picture, very good results!)
  • 20 mm x 5 mm x 3 mm (largest, preferred for the large kit)

With this kit, students can quickly create an energy bar chart in order to describe how the energy of a system is distributed at an instance in time. I left the top of the bar blank so you can have students write the notations you prefer on them. A little painters tape will give them a good surface for labeling. You can use the gcode I have included if you have an mk3, which has a built in pause for the magnets.

If you don't want to add magnets, you can also attach velco for a similar effect.

Please also consider printing the Vector bar model for students to use in understanding motion and forces!
