This is a Gadget-cache geocache birdhouse which makes use of a small 5x5 inch Etch A Sketch for solving the code.

READ BEFORE PRINTING!

I printed with PETG, 10% infill, 4 walls. PLA should work fine, just make sure it isn't in direct sunlight.

To solve this geocache, you need to:

  1. Pull out the perch
  2. Slide out the Etch A Sketch Caddy
  3. Follow instructions on cache page for twisting the two dials on the Etch A Sketch. This writes out a 4-number combination (Detailed instructions below)
  4. Unlock the lock, and grab the Altoids tin.

With help from Two2Steps (linktr.ee/AmateurGGC) I was able to develop a super simple locking mechanism, which ensures the lock's shackle keeps the Altoids tin from being removed or opened. An altoids tin fits perfectly in the vertical slot in the back, so any obstruction – a lock in this case – prevents it from being removed. An altoids tin is necessary for this hide, as it is shaped perfectly for the slot.

If you do end up hiding, please credit OnlineGuy (me) for the 3D model. Also, DM me or comment below! I'd love to hear about it.

Printing Instructions:
Print 0.2mm height and with 4 walls and 10-20% infill for each piece. supports should be on the edges of the roof of the birdhouse. I printed with PETG for the UV resistance but a layer of paint would do the same.

Detailed instructions for setting up this hide:
Two things to set up - first the cache page, and the Etcha Sketch.

On the cache page should be a series of steps for the Etcha A Sketch. For example: [Left knob half a turn clockwise. Right knob half a turn. counterclockwise. Left knob full turn counterclockwise. Go to the green X (explained below)]. To prevent people from “solving at home,” a few things should be implemented. First, avoid mentioning the etcha-sketch in the cache page. Second, add a series of points marked with sharpie on the sketch for the user to go to at specific points, including the beginning and various other points. Ideally include one or two Xs in the middle of some numbers, such that they cannot be drawn at home.

On the Etch A Sketch, as mentioned before, add a red X with sharpie and instruct the user to start there. Then add more points. Write on the rim of the sketch “SHAKE WELL WHEN DONE” to erase. Cover all writing with clear tape, like masking tape.

A small keyholder ring can be placed on the Etch A Sketch caddy. I used one from a bison tube. Cache comes with a thin black circle that should be super glued to the birdhouse fake hole.

A miniature Etch A Sketch is required for this cache.

Below is the lock I used. Any lock should work so long as it is weather resistant and has a shackle at least 3mm. Below is the lock I used.

There are holsters for straps on the back. You can also use zip ties. Below are the straps I used.
