This is a geared matrix kinetic art piece that I designed in the last couple of days for Open Sauce. I've been wanting to do something similar to this for a while, and the concept of a logo going from chaos to a complete picture sounded awesome in my mind.

Since this is for a Prusa sponsored contest, I thought it would be really cool to feature a bunch of fun 3d printing techniques as well. I used print-in-place gears, printed threads and screws, 3d printed tools/inserts, spring clamps, virtually no supports, and a few other things to create it.

It's not polished by any means! The compounding effects of backlash and poor radial alignment could make it tough to rotate depending on your print settings, but applying some lube should be able to help out.

I did everything on 0.2mm standard settings with PLA.

I unfortunately ran out of time for the competition with travel coming up, but I hope to revisit the project and make something really awesome that is easier for everyone to print in the future.

Maybe I'll even fill a whole wall with tileable components. Also, this is done using flat multicolor printing, but it would be so cool to have a version that is 3-dimensional and modeled so you can feature things like layered paintings, Hueforge, or topological maps.

Since it is multicolor, make sure to assign the colors in your slicer if you do end up printing it, and if you want to motorize the print, I just used this cheap motor off of amazon and my own stepper driving circuit.
