Filament Spool Divider

If you have many filament spools in your storage and each of them has small amount of filament remaining on it, this model saves your storage space a lot. (Well, I'm preparing for publishing filament rewinder dedicated for the divided spools.)

It is printable on a single plate with a small amount of material ~100g even for a four-section divider.

Two-section and three-section dividers are also provided which requires even smaller amount of materials (37g and 66g).

The standard version requires a bed size larger than ~200mm x 120mm to print a pair of the model at once.

For smaller bed sizes, for example 180mm x 180mm, split versions are also provided. It requires a minimum bed size of ~160mm x 130mm to print a pair of the model at once.

The split versions are designed to self-support overhanging parts. So, cut off the supports by nippers after printing.

Requirements

  • An empty filament spool with an internal width and core diameter that is in the following list:

    • Internal width 56 mm with core diameter 90 mm (w56cd90).
    • Internal width 57 mm with core diameter 80 mm (w57cd80).
    • Or any other sizes: They are supported by the parametrized Fusion360 design file.
    • I will provide new stl files for other sizes on request, too.

  • Some superglue that can glue the printed parts on your empty filament spool.
    • For non-split version, even without glue, the divider parts are fixed on the spool when the filaments are wrapped on it.

Points of innovation

  • The parametrized design fits any size of your empty spools, hopefully.
  • Two-section, Three-section and four-section dividers are provided.
  • Minimal usage of filament
    37g for two-section divider, 66g for three-section divider, and 100g for four-section divider.
  • Fast printable on a single plate (> 160mm x 130mm).
    • No need to print many parts on multiple plates.
    • Set line width to 0.6 mm with 0.4 mm nozzle for the best result. See below.

The dividing blades have fast-printable zero-retraction structure with 0.6 mm line width, that provides enough stiffness with minimal materials.

Printer setting

  • INCREASE LINE WIDTH TO 0.6 mm when you use a 0.4 mm nozzle, to make the divider blades printed as single walled.
  • You can also increase line height, for example, to 0.25 mm, for faster printing.
  • Painted brims on the ends of the footprint ("Brim ears") helps stable printing.
  • No support is required. Roughness on overhanging parts does not affect functionality. (The split version contains required supports in the model.)

File name notation

  • w12cd34od56div2 means:
    • width 12mm
    • core diameter 34mm
    • outer diameter 56mm
    • two-section divider
  • w12cd34od56div2s means:
    • if the name is ended with “s”, that is a split version
    • otherwise, it is normal version
