The Seizure Emergency SafeSteps Platform - SafeSteps QR (quick response code).

Brought to by the Epilepsy + Data Science Lab

What is this?

This QR code is intended for those who care for someone with seizures. If you hold this QR code up to a modern smartphone camera, it will send the phone a link to a website that provides 4 quick reminder messages for what to do at the time of a seizure: 1) nothing in mouth, 2) 5 minutes? call 911 (or country specific code) 3) protect the head 4) lay down on side. The website is here: https://sites.google.com/site/danielgoldenholz/Home/safesteps

Why are these messages important?

  1. NOTHING IN MOUTH.There is a myth that you can swallow your tongue and die during a seizure, and therefore people should put something into your mouth to save you. In fact, our lab published a study about this (read paper). This is a foolish myth without factual basis. Indeed, many people do put things into the mouth of people having seizures, and then the patient gets hurt (like breaking a tooth) or swallows something that they might choke on. Putting something in the mouth only ADDS danger. Never do it.
  2. 5 MINUTES? CALL 911. Seizures that last longer than 5 minutes are likely to cause brain damage. Time is brain. Most seizure last less than 2 minutes, so if a patient is still convulsing after 5 minutes, they are having a life threatening emergency, and there is no time to do anything except call an ambulance, who likely have life-saving medicine onboard.
  3. PROTECT THE HEAD. Patients that have seizures can injury their head. It is easy to move things away from them, cover sharp things with pillows, blankets, clothing or other soft objects.
  4. LAY DOWN ON SIDE. Patients sometimes can vomit during or after a seizure. If this happens, they should vomit OUT of their body, rather than IN to their lungs, which can cause aspiration pneumonia.

How should I print this?

Also note: these keychains will be used in hot places (such as left in the car on a hot day). PETG is much more heat stable than PLA - it is recommended to use PETG for SafeSteps.

NEW VERSION (v11): print in 2 colors with any printer, with or without multicolor feature.

Print everything but the top layer in 1 color, switch to a second color for the top layer. Purple is considered the official color for supporting epilepsy, so consider that color.

In PrusaSlicer, you can set a color switch at a particular layer. Other slicers have similar featire.

If you have a multicolor printer, the components can be colored easy - just color the QR code separately.

I printed this with 0.2mm layer height, no brim, no supports.

OLD VERSION (v4): print in 2 colors with a multicolor printer

The 3MF file is set up to be 2 colors. Purple is considered the official color for supporting epilepsy, so consider that color.

There are two STL files which are the two colors separately. Together they are 49mm square, which is pretty big. I recommend printing this thing standing upright with a brim - the quality comes out much better. There is also a 3MF file of the two parts standing up and scaled to 24.5mm - this size is much more portable - qrcodeSafeSteps-v4-smallVert. Either way is of course fine, and both versions should be printed standing on the side with a brim for higher quality. Printed flat (ie not on the side) on a Prusa MK4S+/MMU3 gave poor results.

UPDATE: I added a keychain handle to one of the colored STL parts, called v4-a. You can connect that to v3-b and now have a handle for a small keychain if you wish. There is also a 3mf file for the entire 2 color ensemble with the handle called SafeStepsQRwithHandle-v4.

I printed this at 0.15mm layer height, 15% infill, with brim, and no supports.

I also successfully printed the SafeStepsQRwithHandle-v4 at 0.25mm layer height, 15% infill, with brim, no supports. Probably other settings will work too.

How was this made?

Thank you to https://qrcode2stl.printer.tools/ which allows one to make customized QR codes! I added a nicer handle on the end to that in PrusaSlicer.
