Description

PDF

This was created from the LINZ 8m DEM data in QGIS.

The model uploaded here is a placeholder (so don't print it as it will be very thin and have poor detail), as the thirty eight 200x200mm STL's used to create my 2.2 meter print are 340mb each which adds up to around 13GB, far too big for STL sharing sites. I have uploaded them to Google Drive instead (link below), but unless you want to print to the exact final dimensions I have I would highly recommend you create your own STL's, that way you retain maximum resolution and can have it fit your desired space perfectly. I have created an easy to follow guide to create your own custom size 3D model of New Zealand.

Link to finished STL's for a final display dimensions of 2200(H)x1600mm(W), or if displayed side-by-side NI dimensions 1200(H)x800mm(W), SI 1200(H)x1000mm(W). Uses around 2kg filament and 220hrs total print time. Settings used to generate these STL's in QGIS/DEMto3D: 300m base elevation gain, 1:675,000 scale, 200x200mm tiles (135km x 135km), 0.15mm spacing, 1.750x Z exaggeration.
Recommended print settings:
Layer height: 0.15mm Quality
Infill: 30%
Perimeters: 3
Single perimeter on top surfaces (under Print Settings -> Layers and perimeters at the bottom, Expert settings must be enabled): All top surfaces
Minimum feature size (under Print Settings -> Advanced at the bottom): 38% (to reduce number of small dots over the print.
