A simple refillable GZD 1925 activated charcoal filter unit for various kitchen extraction hoods, in my case an old Electrolux Modell 404033. 

New original filters currently are ~13€/piece plus shipping and last roughly two months, resulting in a minimum running cost of 78€/year. My filter costs ~2€ to print in ASA, can be refilled with standard activated charcoal pellets (~20€ for 2.5kg), and can hold roughly 150g of pellets. Assuming a charcoal change every two months, my filter is 89%-93% more cost-efficient, even more if you buy activated charcoal in bulk.

Printing instructions:

  • The included .3mf is ready-to-print and includes two plates - the housing unit and the top mesh.
  • Use ASA or ABS. Don't use PLA. PETG might work, but personally I wouldn't trust its heat resistance.
  • Ensure that after slicing, the preview looks like what's shown in the images on this page. In short, ensure that:
    • Bottom Mesh
      • Top shell layers = 0
      • Bottom shell layers = 0
      • Sparse infill density ≥ 25% (depends on the size of charcoal pellets you use; 25% works for my 4mm Ø pellets. If yours are smaller, bump this value up.)
      • Sparse infill pattern = Honeycomb
      • Only one wall on top surfaces = OFF
      • Sparse infill line width = .5mm
      • Internal solid infill line width = .5mm
    • Top Mesh
      • Wall loops = 8
      • Top shell layers = 0
      • Bottom shell layers = 0
      • Sparse infill density ≥ 30% (same as above; err on the side of having this value higher. This mesh is what prevents pellets from being sucked into the fan blades.)
      • Sparse infill pattern = Honeycomb
      • Only one wall on top surfaces = OFF
      • Sparse infill line width = .5mm
      • Internal solid infill line width = .5mm

Usage:

  1. Fill up the filter with acid-free activated charcoal pellets up to where the threads on the connector start.
  2. Screw on the top mesh. Use a small fork or similar if it's too difficult to turn by hand.
  3. Ensure that pellets cannot fall through either mesh.
  4. Attach filter unit securely.
  5. Change pellets every 2-3 months.
