Create Your Own CoolRacks for Centrifuge Tubes from Delivery Cool Packs!
With this model, you can make your own CoolRacks by simply upcycling the cool packs you receive with deliveries in your lab. The racks can be treated with 70% EtOH for use in laminar flow hoods, helping to avoid potential contamination from ice trays.
This model is compatible to use with an Opentrons OT-2 pipetting robot.
Instructions
- Print the file with the centrifuge tube openings facing the build plate (no supports necessary).
- Our lab's CoolRacks were printed with PLA.
- Take one cool pack from your deliveries that contains gel.
- Evenly fill the empty CoolRack with the gel until it is about ⅔ full (to accommodate expansion).
- Using a syringe with a needle or a pipette, carefully apply acetone along the inner lip of the outer wall.
- Place the printed lid onto the acetone-treated lip and wait 2–3 hours for the acetone to evaporate and bond the parts.
- Test the finished CoolRack by placing it in a plastic bag and freezing it. This helps check if the model was overfilled—adjust the filling amount for your next attempt accordingly.
