This is an updated version of my original replacement case for the ZX Spectrum +2A/B (ZX Spectrum +2A/B Replacement Case by TomDD | Download free STL model | Printables.com). To accommodate printing on new larger-bed printers, I am using a Kobra 3 Max. A print bed with at least one dimension of 340mm is required.

Initially, I attempted to print the top part in one piece, but this consumed a significant amount of filament for the supports, and the final finish was often unsatisfactory. To resolve this, I split the top into two parts for easier printing, requiring only the two sections to be glued together. I have added alignment join pins to assist with this process, and normal super glue works well.

As in my original design, this case is narrower than the original due to the removal of the tape drive, with the keyboard centrally mounted. All other dimensions remain unchanged, and all ports remain accessible.

The case includes a mount for the Retrobright ZX Spectrum +2A&B internal IDE hard drive interface.

Additionally, it features a hole for a 3.5mm jack plug, allowing connection to a tape drive without modifying the PCB. This jack plug utilizes the original tape drive connector and requires only the PLAY and GND lines to be connected. It also powers the case LED, and the case includes a mount for the original PCB.

Printing Recommendations

  • Use a strength profile; otherwise, the screw supports may be too weak. I recommend four wall loops and increasing the infill density to 25%.
  • For the top finish, use aligned rectilinear; otherwise, light will reflect differently on the top ridge compared to the bottom.
  • When printing the bottom section, use supports for the left and right overhangs and the two screw mounts.
  • For the top section, supports are only necessary to assist with the recessed areas.

Assembly Instructions

To join the two top parts:

  1. First, glue the alignment pins in place.
  2. Once dry, apply glue to the lower top section and attach the upper top section.
  3. Hold it in place until secure.

There are two versions of the top section:

  • One includes logos, which can be colored if using a multi-colored printer.
  • One is plain, without logos.

Use the original screws from the ZX Spectrum case to secure the assembly.
