The divider is a basic flat shape, hollowed in the middle to reduce material usage, and filleted on the back edges, so that it doesn't catch on the edge of a DVD case when pushing it in between cases.

The real value comes when you use PrusaSlicer to add text modifiers to it, for an MMU to switch colors, and embed the text in the divider. Please see the “with text” print 3mf file below for an example.

Design considerations

This is designed to go on a shelf with a mix of DVD and Blu-ray size cases, and be very visible when viewed both on-edge and at an angle.

The height is shorter than most video and game disc cases, so they sit beside the cases without getting in the way. To increase visibility when viewed on-edge, a diagonal “caution” stripe is implemented on the spine with multi-material printing.

I use a genre classification system based on the physical rooms at Scarecrow Video in Seattle, WA, US. I created a 3-letter designation for the room that the video is in, placed inside the black bar at the top of the divider; and then a full text representation of the sub-genre title, written vertically on the divider tab.

For instance, if you look up “Towering Inferno” in the Scarecrow library, you'll see that it's in the Psychotronic (PSY) room, and in the Disaster! genre.

Obviously, if you prefer to use a different classification system, modify as necessary. :D

Printing suggestions

I printed in PLA, with a black filament set for Extruder 1, and a hi-viz / “neon” yellow filament for extruder 2.

I imposed the text with the Dank Mono typeface, in bold, since this is easily readable, and monospaced, so has a predictable layout structure. If you prefer a different typeface, or just don't have Dank Mono available to you, you will need to customize the Text modifiers to suit your chosen typeface.

You will need to modify the room and genre text modifiers separately for both the front and back of each divider. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to rename the Text modifiers for clarity, to show which one is the back and which is the front. Hopefully the ordering of my modifier layers helps in that regard.

Future improvements

These do not currently work with CD-sized jewel cases, but I plan to create a separate model for that purpose
