Holobox 2 – Holographic Illusions Within Everyone’s Reach
Holobox 2 is a 3D-printable box designed to transform your smartphone into a window into imaginative worlds. With a simple yet ingenious system of internal reflections, it creates the optical illusion of holographic images seemingly suspended in mid-air, visible through the front panel. Whether it’s rotating planets in deep space, fish swimming in a virtual aquarium, or fireworks igniting a dark sky, the effect is instant and breathtaking.
The model is optimized for FDM printing with PLA, preferably in black for better contrast. No supports, brim, or raft are needed.
Recommended settings:
• Nozzle: 0.4 mm
• Layer height: 0.2 mm
• Infill: 15%
• Final dimensions: 116 x 185 x 99 mm
For supporters, a commercial version is available which does not include the front text and may be used for professional purposes.
Holobox 2 is the evolution of my first Holobox. It features a wider front window, an internal guide for easy smartphone placement, and a drawer-style adapter for devices with screens shorter than 15 centimetres.
Upon request, I can provide custom drawer adapters for other smartphone models, provided they fit within the maximum dimensions of Holobox 2.
Additionally, the model includes an optional rear panel for those who prefer a fully enclosed design.
To fully enjoy the holographic effect, you will need a transparent panel measuring 13x18 cm with a thickness of about 1 mm (similar to the acrylic panels used in standard photo frames). Simply slide the panel into the dedicated internal guides of the Holobox.
Place your smartphone with the display facing down in the top frame. Play a fullscreen video with sharp contrasts—such as scenes of swimming fish on a dark background, stars, planets, or fireworks—and watch the magic as the image is reflected onto the transparent panel, creating the illusion of a hologram.
