Design

This dew shield / scattered light protection was designed for a Skywatcher 150 PDS (150/750 f5) but should also suite for a 150 P or even a 150 Quattro (f/4) as the diameter don't change between this models.

The shield rests on the screws for the secondary mirror spider. There are two possibilitys to fix the shield on the scope:

  • Wrap a String/Cord/Rubber/Velcro fastener/cable ties over the retaining pads and the screws.
  • Fit the M3 nut and the screw to tighten the shield onto the pipe.

Height: approx. 100 mm above the tube end.

Printing

Print it in PETG as it is flexible even in cold temperatures, Nozzle 0.4 mm or 0.6 mm.
Brim! Depending on the adhesion to the printing plate, select either Auto-Brim or Manual, but set it high enough and set a smaller margin/object distance to ensure that the print adheres to the plate. I don't really like brim, but I'd rather do a bit more rework than throw faulty prints in the bin.
The print is about 167 grams. Printed it on a Bambulab X1C with a nozzle 0.6 mm.

Even though the printer could have printed faster, I chose lower speeds (100 mm/s) / flow rates (about 20 mm³/s instead of the possible 28 mm³/s) to get a nice print and particularly nice seams / scarves.
Print it overnight so printing time doesn't matter.
For further details of my used settings see the Slicer-model file.

As long as you line the inside with adhesive foil made of black velour velvet fabric (strongly recommended), the color of the print is irrelevant for usability.

Assembly

If you use cord/rubber/... to attach the shield to the tube, nothing else needs to be done.

I prefer the adjustment via the screws to get a nice clamping to put the shield firmly but easily on the telescope and to be able to remove it just as easily.

You need:

  • 2 hexagon Nuts M3 ISO 4032 (DIN 934) M3 (steel or stainless steel)
  • 2 screws with a length of at least 16 mm. I recommend hexagon socket screws ISO4762 (DIN 912) M3x18 or ISO 7380 Hexagon socket button head screw. Steel or stainless steel, it doesn't matter. The longer the screws are, the longer the protrusion of the screws (see photos), as long as the thread is not more than 12 mm from the cap.

The screw pockets are designed so that the nuts are held in place by a press fit. To insert, fill the gap, e.g. with pliers, and tighten the screw until the force increases significantly.

At the end line the inside with adhesive foil made of black velour velvet fabric. You can see the difference in reflection and light scattering in one of the photos.

Other sizes

The gap for the clamping is 5 mm on each side, so clamping on telescopes with a few mm less outer diameter should be possible - perhaps 6 mm? But be careful, the lower part of the shield is tapered with a diameter of 187 mm at the bottom and 185 mm at the top (at a height of 40 mm).

If you really need it diameter for 130 mm, feel free to contact me. But with the Skywatcher telescopes, measuring the outer diameter (which I need) is not easy, so maybe a few test prints would be possible.
