A simple mod for the Slimline PlayStation 2 that protects your discs from getting scratched by the lasers ribbon cable. Support for both laser types!
The mod should work on any PS2 Slim model in theory but confirmed to work on 70004 & 90004 model consoles, since those are the ones I own. Please let me know if you encounter incompatibility issues.
Printing
- Print upside down with supports for the guard part itself
- I used PETG, PrusaSlicer w/ default "0.15mm OPTIMAL" profile & "support on build plate only"
Tools needed
- JIS/Phillips screwdriver (For the “rare” laser type opening the console is optional, but recommended for more space during installation)
- Super glue (cyanoacrylate)
- Something to spread the glue with (toothpick etc.)
optional for surface preparation
- Sandpaper or a small file
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Cotton swabs
Installation
- Open the console with a screwdriver. (For the “rare” laser type opening the console is optional, but recommended for more space.)
- Ensure the lasers ribbon cable is secured on it's original position. (If the cable adhesive is completely gone, I highly recommend replacing the cable with a replacement that has a new adhesive. Thin & strong tape can be used for slightly loosened cable, I used polyimide/Kapton tape.)
- Glue the part on. (Optionally you can prepare the surfaces by slightly sanding & cleaning with isopropyl alcohol after. A piece of paper can be used to shield the laser during the gluing. Spread the glue thin & evenly. The part should lay completely flat on it's intended position so that the part itself won't cause disc scratching. If you failed the installation, a x-acto knife can be used to remove the part.)
- Put the console back together & test. (Preferably not on your most valuable disc :))
Shoutout
to FloppidyDingo for the original idea, you can find their version for the common laser type here
