I wanted to make the box jellyfish enclosure for a while but, having terrible trouble sourcing affordable polycarbonate sheets in the last year, I fell back to opaque panels which I could only find in imperial thicknesses. I settled with 24x24x¼" ceiling tiles, they are MDF with a thin laminate surface. Easy to cut to size and drill.

The reason for outside plates is that with opaque panels, it didn't look as clean as with acrylic so they hide imperfections.

This is not entirely a remix as I didn't replace any of the original parts (except the slider that raises the top over the door, to accommodate the slightly thicker panels), but I diverged slightly from the build order and made additional parts to complete it to my liking.

All the shims make it so it's possible to change panels later if prices drop or there is an influx of used polycarbonate when stores get rid of their counter screens.

Instructions:

  1. Using instructions from the original design, cut and drill your panels
    • If you'll use ¼" panels, you have to add 2.4mm to the side dimensions to account for the added thickness so it fits over the lack table
  2. Print all parts from the original design
  3. Print the outside plates from either set that matches the panels you get
    • There are 2 parts sets:
      • for ¼" sheets use set 1
      • for 5mm sheets use set 2
    • If you build an enclosure with ¼" sheets but get to use 5mm sheets in the future, no need to reprint the other set, just use the shims from set 3. All bolts will align correctly
    • If, like me, you have 1/8" polycarbonate because it's cheaper, there is a door shim in set 3 that can be used with the original hinges so the door sits flat against the front
  4. Use M4x16mm flathead screws for all parts with hex nuts. For screws that don't go through a plate, you can use these countersink washers.
