Jammar Kattarwala Ghost Clip

In this project me and Jalk Jakly created a ghost clip. These ghost clips are designed to hold pieces of paper together.

Jalk Jakly project ( https://www.printables.com/model/1238978-jammar-jack-ghost-clip ). Our initial goal for this project was to make our ghost clips similar and create a very unique design to it. The measurements for this item are 13 cm long and 6 cm wide.  

 

Problem Statement: 

With a partner, we had to recreate a ghost clip using Solidworks. In the end, we had to have identical files by collaborating on each step, one at a time.

 

Assembly/Construction instruction section: 

Create a constraint box using a centerpoint box “from midpoints” option selected, and centered from the origin. This should be made of construction lines.

The problem was that we had made the triangles and the bumps on the constraint box on the outside as opposed to the inside of the box. 


We fixed it by changing the box height to 11 cm so that when it gets combined with the triangles, and the bumps the height still ends up being the same as the original. 

2. Create 6 identical triangles at the top of the ghost 

  1. Make the triangles equal and made all the sides 1 cm long
  2. Make 6 equal construction lines for the base of the triangles 

      3. We used the mirror tool to help us reflect the triangles because they would not be equal if we did not mirror them, we did this by creating lines connecting to the endpoint of the base of the triangle.  


 

3. Create 3 semi-circles at the bottom of the constraint box

  1. First we used circles but then we realized that arches were easier 
  2. Each arch should be 2 cm long and 1 cm wide 
  3. As you can see, we had difficulty in making the arches perfectly on the point, which is why the arches were blue and not shaded in


 

4. Create one vertical lines connecting from the bottom left point of the triangle, to the top left point of the first arch and mirror that line over the origin 

5. Create a circle for one eye 

  1. Create one circle and smart dimension it so that it has a radius of 1.2cm and is 4.5 cm above the origin and to also smart dimension it again to keep the circle 1.5 cm away from the left edge of the constraint box 
  2. Mirror the circle over the origin 


 

 


 

6. Create the mouth 

  1. Draw one vertical line that is 4 cm tall and the bottom point is 2 cm below the origin and 1.2cm away from the left side of the constraint box
  2. Mirror the half smile over the origin
  3. Create an arch that connects the lines and is 1.5cm long


     
  4. Use offset entities to create another mouth inwards with a scale of 0.5 cm. Cap the ends


 

7. Extrude the ghost

  1. Exit the sketch 
  2. extrude the ghost by 0.10 cm by using the extrusion boss tool

8. Engraving the initials 

  1. Create a new sketch 
  2. Make a horizontal construction line that passes through the origin from the left side of the mouth to the right side of the mouth
  3. Move the line about 1/4 the way down from the top of the ghost
  4. Select this line 
  5. Go on the “Text Sketching Tool” 
  6. Type the initial of your first name and choose the “impact” font for these initials and then change the font size to 1.5cm 
  7. Click the green check mark
  8. Now make the same horizontal line below by 2/4 of the way down the first initial from the left side of the mouth to the right
  9. Go on the “Text Sketching Tool” after selecting this line
  10. Type the initial of your last name and choose the “impact” font for these initials and then change the font size to 1.5cm 
  11. Click on your sketch from the “Feature Tree” 
  12. Then click on “Extrude cut” 
  13. Change the dimension in the menu that has replaced your “Feature Tree” to 0.0495cm

    

Design choices: 

  1. We created a similar sketch to this one, on paper before modeling it on to solidworks, just so that we got an idea of how to make it
  2. The sketch was slightly off and we could not get the results we wanted
  3. We also created some instructions but we did not follow them properly because of the errors we faced

           

2. When we made the plan and guidelines, we realized that several things did not work the way we imagined. One major issue we encountered was that using the bottom humps did not give us the result we wanted. This ended in our points not being exact, which became a problem for us


 

In this picture the sketch above you can see that the humps are not locked down and filled in. after wiggling the points and checking where they connect, we were able to see that we did not make out semi-circles connect exactly on the line we created 


 

3. We also had trouble with the triangles. At first, there were slight problems with them being unequal, and we fixed this by drawing a smart dimension from the legs, making them each 1 cm and then we reflected it over the lines we created from the one cornerpoint of our triangle, this assured us that our triangles would be equal 

4. The sketching went well but we noticed some problems printing and creating the design on solidworks. These problems were mainly located in the mouth and eyes. We could have fixed this problem if only we moved the eyes and the mouth slightly more upwards before printing out the ghost and we also should have kept the construction lines for JL but we were able to fix that before printing the ghost out, which was a little troublesome. 

Conclusion:

Except for some of the minor mistakes we made like in the mouth and the eyes, our project went very well and we were able to create ours identical to each other. However it was also almost identical to the original ghost clip which is a good thing. We hope that this helps you create a good ghost clip and that you find a good reason to use it
