Description

BOOMBOX is objectively the best Bowden extruder on the planet - by a margin of 3x over the next-best option*. If you're ready to find out what Bowden can deliver when it's not handicapped by extruders unfit for purpose, you're in the right place.

*Why? Because it's FAST! Fast enough for the Pressure Advance demands of high-PA, high-acceleration Bowden printing - without sacrificing the strength required for high-flow printing.

** Simplified STL model with separate extruder body, bracket, and steppers.

FEATURES:

  • Tailor extrusion force to almost any use case – from BMG- to (massive) Sherpa Heavy 7T-equivalent power depending on stepper selection*
  • Linked-tension idler mechanism ensures consistent extrusion quality
  • 1:1 drive for huge filament speed and acceleration, delivering maximum Pressure Advance performance under extreme print conditions
  • Easy-set, easy-open tension controls
  • Easy to print and straightforward to assemble design

*0.42Nm Steppers used in the test unit in the pictures that's clocking 10+kg - for reference, Orbiter 2 hits about 6.5.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS (see documentation for full list!):

  • Mounting space for a huge extruder
  • 2 available stepper drivers, or 1 external high-current driver, to power 2 large stepper motors
  • Ability and willingness to read instructions ;)

USE CASES:

BoomBox is excellent for:

  • General-purpose Bowden setups on most printer sizes.
  • Extreme high-speed printing on small to medium-size printers.
  • Extreme volumetric rates (e.g., with large nozzles) where other extruders hit torque loss due to high feedrate.

BoomBox is less ideal for:

  • Extremely fine-detail printing (0.3mm or smaller nozzles at below 0.1mm LH, e.g., for minis), especially with 1.8 degree steppers.

BoomBox probably won't:

  • Print flexibles like TPU.

YOU CAN DO IT!  Accessible build with comprehensive documentation!

As featured on YouTube by @JamesPray (that's me!*), @Rolohaun (link), and more. 15 months in the making. Engineered from the ground up to solve the fundamental hardware barriers to quality high-performance Bowden extrusion. Extensively tested and beta tested. Documented by a professional author (also me!).  DON'T WAIT!  Make Bowden great with BOOMBOX!

*Only BoomBox teases so far on my channel as of 3/20/2025 - see my Delta WR Speedbenchy and SDTX video mentions - but a full release video is coming as quickly as I can cut it!  (I'm not very fast at making videos, but I'm trying very hard!)

PRINTER COMPATIBILITY:

Printer-specific compatibility is still being determined (early days!).  PLEASE consult the documentation and do your research before buying, whether or not your printer is listed as “likely compatible”!

VERY LIKELY COMPATIBLE, GENERAL CHECKLIST:

  • Printer is already Bowden-configured
  • Board is aftermarket and has 2 open stepper drivers (e.g., most BTT boards, Duet 2 or 3) OR driver connectors that would allow for connecting an external stepper driver
  • Firmware is “real” Klipper, RRF, or Marlin with configuration that you are free and able to update (not a manufacturer's fork that's limited or locked down)

RED FLAGS, DO YOUR RESEARCH:

  • Board and/or stepper connections are proprietary or not user-modifiable
  • Little or no evidence of other aftermarket extruders compatible with the machine
  • Firmware is proprietary and/or limits user configuration updates
  • Power supply unit is very low-wattage (<100W?)
  • Toolhead or hotend has no physical provision for a Bowden fitting

LIKELY COMPATIBLE:

  • Most printers with broad aftermarket extruder options (Creality, FLSUN, Prusa, AnyCubic)
  • Most Vorons
  • Most Annex printers
  • Most custom or home-built machines

SPECIFIC PRINTERS (last update 4.5.2025):

  • TBD
