This is a remake of my 6x3mm magnet model to use the cheaper 5x2mm magnets. This reduces the size and the strength, and could be nice for those that want a gentler tactility as the 6x3mm magnets can be very strong.

The outer case has spots for 3 magnets:

  1. magnets in the middle spot only (empty-N-empty) will give you a gently magnetic fidget toy
  2. magnets in the outer spots only (N-empty-N) will give you a decently magnetic fidget toy
  3. opposing polarity magnets in outer and middle spots (N-S-N) will give you a nicely tactile magnetic fidget toy
  4. same polarity magnets in middle and one outer spot (empty-N-N) will double the number of steps or clicks but will be a bit more gently magnetic.

I opted for option 3 for my first attempt and it was rather nicely tactile - kind of a goldilocks strength IMO.

Print/Assembly notes:

  • you'll need to pause the print of the inner portion to add in the magnets (pockets for magnets in the outer portion are open, so you can glue them in once fully printed)
  • you'll need to print two of the outer pieces to glue them together once everything is assembled
  • alignment pins weren't necessary for the outer halves as the magnets aligned everything surprisingly well
