We remodeled our kitchen and installed probably the cheapest sink ever to exist. If water gets trapped on it, it starts to develop surface rust pretty quickly. So for like a year we've been keeping our soap in the sink on a rack to prevent any water getting trapped under the bottles.
Let me reiterate: Our sink cannot get wet or it breaks. Wat.
This started as a way to get the bottles on the back of the sink while minimizing their contact patch with the sink and maximizing airflow to prevent rusting the sink. Then it just made sense to… and a couple revisions later, you get what you see here.
- The main structure is full of holes to allow airflow.
- The entire thing is raised by a textured ridge around the outside. This lifts the entire thing so it's not contacting the sink over most of the underside, and the texture reduces the amount of contact the ridge is making and allows more airflow.
- There's a ¼" lip on the back (OPEN variant) or back and front to hold it in place--the side that contacts the sink has the same textured pattern.
- There are two extra supports added in the middle in case your house has some vigorous pumpers. These sit on the sink with a rounded shape to, again, minimize contact patches and maximize airflow.
- There are separate hex pegs you can print if you want to prevent the soap moving around. The pegs have a small round bump on the bottom so you can push them all the way in and they'll act as additional support while still keeping a minimal contact patch.
There are two variants here:
- The “OPEN” variant has no front lip and should be usable if you don't have the same exact crappy cheap sink as I do.
- The main one has a lip on the front and back and friction-fits nicely over the back of my sink. It's easy to install and remove but doesn't slide around or come off in normal use. This is mostly included as an example for anyone that wanted to do the same for their own particular sink.
The “PIN” model is the hex pegs to stick in. In my prints they generally all fit with a little wiggling and some cursing. I did have a couple as I was iterating on this that took a very light sand of the bottom corners/edges before I could coax them in.
