This is WAWACAN, a smol watering can for smol hands.

I designed WAWACAN for my toddler, who loves watering the plants in the garden but struggles to lug around the big watering can. WAWACAN is the size of a large coffee mug, the perfect size for young children to start learning how to take care of plants. And because toddlers are not known for their tendency to put things away, I made WAWACAN a fluid, sculptural shape, so that it would look nice just sitting around.

After a bunch of iterations and tweaks, I think I've now got the design dialed in:

  • The wide base and tapered shape make WAWACAN quite stable. One less thing to worry about your kid knocking over.
  • The handle is well balanced, with a subtly triangular profile for an ergonomic grip. It's thin enough for toddler hands to wrap around, but comfy for adult hands as well. The indentation allows the handle to be moved forward, reducing grip torque while allowing enough clearance for bigger hands to not contact the rim of the can.
  • The opening is fairly small, to reduce the amount of splashing when your toddler runs around with a full can of water. But it's unobstructed by the handle, allowing easy filling under a faucet or with a hose nozzle.

It's also optimized for easy printing.

  • The whole thing prints without any need for supports. Overhang angles, at least at 0.2mm layer heights, are perfectly manageable in PLA and PETG.
  • The included print profile has my preferred setting of random seams, which provides a bit of texture anyway. I didn't think there was a great place to hide a seam because it looks smooth from all angles.
  • The wall thickness is mostly 1.6 mm, which is exactly two outer and two inner wall loops with minimal solid infill if you have the standard 0.4mm nozzle. There's no need for more than that; it is plenty watertight.

Print one for your kid. Print one for yourself, and put it next to that houseplant you keep forgetting to water. Put it in your plant cabinet. Hide them around the house, like functional indoor garden gnomes. Have fun!
