It's been a while since I built this so I will neglect/gloss over some details. However it's quite straight-forward. If anything is unclear, ask and I'll probably know the answer.

Stalk

This is specifically designed for my rig. Height for my seat, and the top plate for a Virpil WarBRD. But it is easy to modify.

One word of warning, I messed up the QR hole alignment (rotation). I think this model is correct, but the photos show the mistake: I had to drill new holes in the lower QR to make the flightstick straight (I was too lazy to reprint). So please do a test print, maybe with reduced height to save time to make sure it's ok, otherwise cut the model and rotate the plate to correct any error.

I used PLA on a Bambu A1 Strong Profile. Lots of walls. It's plenty strong enough. Maybe it was Overture PLA Pro, I cannot remember.

QR

  • Print the DIN plates
  • Remove the shell from the GX12-4L, you only need the male/female components.
  • Remove the existing connector from the QR.
  • Split your USB cable taking into account the height of the stalk etc, and solder on the connectors. The female connection is very tricky, take your time and make sure you have a good connection. Test with a multimeter. If you have a hot glue gun, put some over the joints to protect it of vibration/strain
  • Screw the male (metal) part of the GX12 into the 3D printed upper DIN plate. It is a very tight fit.
  • Screw the female part of the GX12 into the lower DIN plate. All the way, again it is very tight.
  • Plug the connectors together, then twist until the mounting holes are aligned.
  • Bolt these plates into their respective parts (feeding the USB through). I used M3 round cap bolts, 6mm? Do not tighten them, give them a little play. Test fit the QR. That's about all the guidance I have, I never tightened the plays completely, the QR guides the two connectors together fine - I am quite gentle when connecting it though.
  • If all is good, it may be a good idea to putt some epoxy on the back of the connectors just to be sure, but the thread fit is so tight I doubt it is needed. IIRC I did add some.

QR mount

  • this sits on the 4080 and has a channel to route the USB cable across the profile back under the seat.

Notes

  • Often the flight stick is rotated around 15 degrees ccw (if right handed) for ergonomics. You could build this into the stalk so the whole base is rotated, not just the flight stick. I didn't, I just rotated the stick flight stick itself.
  • The thickness of the DIN mounts is tuned to remove play in the QR mechanism. It's a very cheap QR, I would never want it in a car… so if there is play once it's locked, try making one of the plates thicker though it should be fine as-is. You can test for play before mounting the GX12
  • The USB component is of course optional… you could connect via USB directly and just use the QR mechanism. That's not as much fun though.

Changelog

  • 2/27/2025 - redesigned top-plate from scratch for improved strength
