The Temple and College of Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) of Querétaro was a Franciscan missionary college, or seminary, in New Spain, in present-day Querétaro, Mexico, and was the second ever Roman Catholic seminary in the New World, it trained missionaries that would later found missions in Texas and California.
Tradition has it that in 1531, Chichimec natives ceased their attacks against the locals due to the apparition of the Holy Cross. A Franciscan temple was built in 1654 in the location of the apparition to commemorate the event. In following several decades, the convent, chapels and other annex buildings were added.
After 1857's Reformation Laws, the complex was confiscated from the Church and was used for various purposes, such as: military headquarters, as prison of Maximillian of Habsburg (Mexico's Second Emperor) in 1867, as a school, and finally abandoned. It was later restored as a Catholic church.
The convent's courtyard has wells that were filled by the famous Aqueduct, being its final destination. There is also a garden here where trees grow thorns in the shape of the Holy Cross (from Wikipedia).
