I designed and built this because I wanted a 5-Pin MIDI controller for live performance/DJ sets that was portable, extremely compact and with at least 32 customisable buttons, so that I could use it to change any of the 32 performance “Scenes” on an Elektron Octatrack (mk1 or mk2) - with one finger and without needing it hooked up to a computer to use. It can of course be used in the studio too but it really shines for live and DJ.
It uses a Teensy++ 2.0 controller board. 44 buttons is the most that the Teensy++ 2.0 can have natively, but this allows me to have the 32 buttons for the Octatrack and also have 12 additional buttons free to customize for any other gear connected up that has 5-Pin MIDI-IN and responds to CC messages, such as ‘reverb on/bypass’ on a Strymon Nightsky pedal for those lush build-ups.
I've wanted such a controller forever but it was previously impossible in such a compact form and footprint, and with so many buttons, until I got my wonderful Prusa 3D Printer!
Full Build Guide included - be sure to check it out!
The project took me a long time and a lot of research - The guide took even longer than the build itself and it's not perfect by any means but I really hope it's of some value to someone wanting to make their own 5-Pin MIDI Controller.
I feel this is a wonderful and incredibly useful project for so many enthusiasts like myself to get stuck into and enjoy! I’m still relatively new to 3D printing so I’m delighted with how this turned out - Hopefully you will be just as happy with your own build! I’m looking forward to seeing your remixes!
Happy designing, printing, building and playing!!
