Hey Everybody,
I'm excited to share my latest project with you all—an Image to STL Converter designed to generate amazing lithophane decors!
Lithophanes are unique 3D-printed artworks that reveal detailed images when backlit, and with this tool, you can create your own personalized lithophane designs easily.
To use the Lithophane Generator download the ZIP and the other files below, or better visit my GitHub for instruction
First of all, I know that a lot of image-to-stl converters exist all around the internet, some of them free, some of them paid, some of them good, some others suck…
But the reason behind it is just like any of the other projects, I did it to learn how it's done.
Then I realized the potential of this project, it could be a good base for an open-source img2stl converter or Lithophane Generator.
I am not going to go through all the details related to it in this post, but you definitely can go and check it out on my Github along with some other amateur projects.
Some key features include:
(Check out this link to see some of the results I was able to get with it)
I’d love to hear your thoughts and see the lithophanes you create using this tool. Feel free to share your creations and any feedback in the comments!
This project is still in its first steps, it still has its problems, the output quality depends on the used image, if it is a high-quality image the final result may be constructed of more than 1M triangles, the thing that is going to make the processing time take longer... A couple of seconds in most cases😊.
The work won't stop here. I may add more features in the future, but I can't do it alone! My two brain cells can only think of a few features to include, and even with that, I won't be able to construct all of them due to lack of time and experience.
However, the script is built using Python, and I am not that good at it, but also everybody can help enhance it.
I program usually using C, or Java and rarely using Python, please don't laugh at my messy code🥲.
If you want to test it out you can find detailed instructions on how to do it over my Github Repo, I have a couple of ways to do it ranging between basic and advanced.
I also generated a stand-alone executable file that can be executed directly without the need to install anything else.
This is it for now, if you want to know more about this project, have a look at my GitHub, If you still have questions, then consider contacting me.
Let’s keep the creativity flowing! 🚀
