Soilless Cat Grass Planter

Design Process

I saw this design on Instagram and went looking for the model. I didn't like the water tray at the bottom as I thought it would look cleaner without it, hence the remix. I also thought it would be nice to have the drain in the back, and I prefer filets over chamfers for cosmetics, so I made all of those edits.

I included iterations of the design as I went through the process of removing the base, removing the side drain, and adding the rear drain, resulting in a version with a side drain, rear drain, and no drain, all with no water tray.

How to use

Planting

1. Fill the base with a single layer of seeds (I used wheatgrass seeds)
2. Add water to the base so that the seeds are submerged
3. Let soak overnight
4. Pour seeds/water into the tray (can use extra water to wash all the seeds out, it just drains through the grate)
5. Fill the base with water (up to drain)d
6. (optional) Cover seed tray in plastic wrap (helps keep humidity high for sprouting)
7. Place in a window sill to grow
8. (if #6 was done) remove plastic wrap when the grass is almost tall enough to touch it
9. Give cats access & keep water in the base topped off

Cleaning/resetting:

1. Run a utility knife along the underside of the tray to cut all the roots
2. Remove the now-freed grass from the tray
3. Wash with soap and water to remove bacteria, mold, fungus, etc.
   • Can also spray with a disinfecting solution – Check the chemical resistance of the polymer used (I used ABS). I use a low-concentration bleach solution with the recommended contact time or throw it in the dishwasher since I used ABS (PLA will warp!)
4. Replant

Removed the water tray at the bottom. Changed the drain geometry to filets instead of chamfers. Created three versions: side drain, rear drain, and no drain.
