This is a new case for this socket set: 1/4 in. Drive SAE and Metric Ratchet and Socket Set (25-Piece) (Amazon, Home Depot)

This socket set has great reviews, but the #1 complaint is the huge case. It's designed to stack with other DeWalt tool set cases, which isn't useful if you don't have those to stack with.

So I decided to just make a much smaller case: just big enough to fit everything the socket set comes with, plus clear labels for every socket size.

What to Print

You'll need:

  • 2x latches
  • 1x bottom
  • 1x top (3 options)

The top can be printed as a single-color print, with empty cutouts for the labels. You can also print it with an MMU for inlayed labels. Or, you can do manual color changes to get the multi-color look with a few manual color swaps. I've included 3MF files for each of these options.

Hardware

In addition to the printed parts, you'll need some M3 hardware to assemble it:

  • 6x M3 nuts (preferably locknuts)
  • 2x 25mm M3 screws (for the hinges)
  • 4x 20mm M3 screws (for the latches)

Assembly

Use two 25mm screws to attach the latch to the case lid. Attach the other 25mm screws to the bottom of the case; the latches will latch onto these directly.

Connect the top and bottom of the case with the 20mm screws.

Important: If at any point you find that the screws don't want to fit freely into the holes, don't force it – you might break the print! Instead, gently warm the area with a hair drier or heat gun and try inserting the screw again. Sometimes the hole openings sag during printing, and this will allow the screw to reshape the hole without damaging it.
