Rusticated concrete block is concrete block with a decorative outside face cast to resemble rough or worked stone. This style of block appeared in the late 19th century and was used for homes, utility buildings, and commercial buildings. This model is based on a small garage in Syracuse, New York, found on this site --

I was curious to see how the block texture would print in HO scale on an FDM printer. I used Polymaker Polyterra matte PLA for the walls; the effect looks pretty good.

All parts for the model in the photo are printed at 0.1mm layers with a 0.2mm extruder. Parts are separated for easy painting or for printing in different colours.

Printing

These parts need supports and rafts:

  • walls.stl works best with a raft or brim but does not need supports
  • roof_ridge.stl needs a raft and supports
  • garage_door_frame.stl needs a raft and supports
  • roof_sheathing.stl needs a raft

Print two each of the following:

  • rafters.stl
  • gable_sheathing.stl
  • gable_fascia.stl
  • gable_framing.stl
  • door.stl
  • window.stl

Print one each of all other parts.

Assembly

  1. Drop the joists into the recess at the top of the walls. Do not glue if you want the roof to be removable.
  2. Assemble the rafters, gluing the rafters to the joists. Be careful not to glue the rafters to the walls.
  3. Glue the gable framing to the rafters.
  4. Glue the gable sheathing to the gable framing.
  5. Glue the roof ridge to the rafters.
  6. Fit the corrugated roof sheathing. The roof sheathing is over-sized and requires trimming for both length and width. Using a very sharp hobby knife, trim one long edge of the roof sheathing to get a crisp edge. Fit the panel to the rafters, butting the crisp edge against the roof ridge. Mark the desired overhand over the rafter ends and trim the roof sheathing to final width.
  7. Glue the fascia to the gable ends.
  8. Glue the doors back-to-back and fit to the door opening. You may need to lightly sand the assembled door to fit.
  9. Glue the windows back-to-back, sandwiching window glazing between the parts, and fit to the window opening. You may need to lightly sand the assembled window to fit.
  10. Fit the floor drain into the recess in the floor. Believe it it not, but I was able to get this part to print! Another option is to trim fine mesh material from a support raft to fit the drain recess.
  11. Glue the floor to the walls.
