Description:

This Pixel Kart Cube combines nostalgia and practicality! The pixel art design inspired by Mario Kart includes a Wi-Fi QR code* for seamless network connectivity and an NFC tag for added convenience. With a height of approximately 8 cm, it’s stylish, functional and perfect for home or workspaces.

*(I used the Fusion 360 plugin to generate the WiFi QR code)

Backstory:

Building on the geometric approach of a previous project, I wanted to combine functionality with decoration. That’s how the idea for this cube was born—featuring a Wi-Fi QR code on one face for easy network access and an NFC tag on another face serving the same purpose.

For the visuals, I wanted to stay true to the pixelated style of a QR code, which naturally led me to pixel art. Since both of us at home are video game enthusiasts, the Mario Kart universe quickly became the obvious choice for the design.

Included in the Set:

  • 6 pixel-art plates:
    • 1 with a Wi-Fi QR code (bottom face).
    • 1 with a pixel-art Wi-Fi logo (top face) includes NFC compartment - print separately).
  • 4 themed plates inspired by the Mario Kart universe.
  • 8 angles for assembly.
  • 1 cap with 25mmx1mm space for NFC tag
  • Additional blank plates:
    • Without NFC compartment.
    • With NFC compartment and caps with 25mmx1mm space.
  • 1 tool for screwing the caps.

Additional Materials:

  • NFC tags (optional) 25mm ⌀ (I used NFC token from Wakdev).

Technical Specifications:

  • Printer used: Prusa Mini+
  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm
  • Layer height: 0.15 mm
  • 4 perimeters | 6 bottom layers (0.6 mm) | 6 top layers (0.6 mm) | 15% infill.
  • Filaments used: Polymaker Polyterra PLA

Printing Instructions:

The plates:

  • "Ironing" parameter activated for a smoother finish.
  • M601 break for color changes:
    • Color changes at layer 33 (4.95 mm height).
    • Color changes at layer 37 (5.55 mm height).

The angles:

  • You must print 8 of them in the “pyramid position.”

Assembly Instructions:

Note: Inserting plates into the angles requires precision and patience. (Refer to the picture.)

  1. Attach 4 angles to the top plate (with NFC compartment).
  2. Attach 4 angles to the bottom plate (with your customized plate).
  3. Add the 4 remaining plates one by one to the bottom plate.
  4. Add the top plate and clip them progressively.
  5. Congratulations! Your cube is complete. Enjoy your creation!
