I bought an aftermarket backup camera for my daughters 2010 Ford Escape. When I was getting ready to mount the camera, I found a factory plastic plug cover that was just covering a hole for something else that might have been there in a different model. So I made a new plug to go in that location, adjust for angle of that part of the tailgate, an give me a hole to screw the camera into.
First, check my pictures to make sure you have he same style of camera or I don't know if this will work for you.
Second, feel under the Ford emblem and see if there is a blank plug cover. If there is, that is the part I designed around and replaced.
Ok, so this is going to be on the exterior of the car so the heat wont be as bad, but the sun, salt, water, oil, etc will be more of a factor than if it were inside the car. I printed all my test fits i PLA, but the final part is ASA.
I have beefed up in a bunch of areas, but this part still requires some thin walls. I would recommend keeping the layer height to around .2 and may even lower in some places. I ran adaptive height and most were .2mm. Print it with the hole going vertical and the flat camera mounting surface down.
The original part had folding tabs to hook it in place, but I cant figure out how to design those into this part while keeping it easy to print. So what I have done is made a little bit of tight fit in the corners. It will almost feel like it wont go in, but it does. The corners are the only tight spot because I didn't want that same pressure everywhere. The lip around the outside allows for adhesive to hold the part in place even though I doubt it would ever move. If you decide to go adhesive, I would use RTV Silicone like they use for making gaskets. It will hold strong once it sets, but can be separated again without damage either part.
Once its printed and ready, you have to install the rest of the camera and thats on you. I'll do my best to help make adjustments if needed, but this is installed and working great on my daughters Escpae. It has a slight downward angle like factory camera setups, sits in the center of the tailgate, and if I didnt tell you its designed and printed by me, you would never guess that it didnt come from Ford like that.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
