I found it hard to justify more than a whole kalax cube for Memoir 44, with the base game and equipment pack overflowing to another shelf.

I had a look around at 3d printed solutions, but nothing really did what I wanted it to do.

I was looking for a sleeved and accessible storage solution for:

  • The Base Game;
  • Eastern Front;
  • Pacific Theatre;
  • Operation Overlord.
  • The Terrain Pack;
  • Equipment Pack;
  • New Flight Plan; [Note: NOT the Air Pack]
  • Winter Wars;
  • Mediterranean Theatre;
  • Winter Desert Board;
  • Breakthrough;
  • Tigers in the Snow;
  • Sword of Stalingrad;
  • Hedgerow Hell;
  • Battles of Khalkhin Gol;
  • Disaster at Dieppe; and,
  • Through the Jungle and Desert.

FIRST BOX

I started with the base game and ended up with (clockwise from top left):

  • A Command Deck Box, sized to fit Mayday premium sleeves (1 1 DeckCommand.stl);
  • Another deck box (1 2 DeckBlank.stl);
  • If you wanted there is room for another deck box;
  • A tray for feature miniatures (1 3 FeatureTray.stl);
  • Two Army Trays (1 4 ArmyTrayx2.stl) with artillery insets (1 5 ArtilleryShortx2.stl);
  • A tray for Terrain and Cards (1 6 TerrainAndCards.stl);
  • A spacer tray which can be used to store anything else (1 7 SpacerTray.stl).

The second layer consists of:

  • A Feature Tray inset, for the cardboard features (1 8 FeatureTrayInset.stl);
  • A Badges Token Tray for the Base Game and The Pacific Theatre (1 9 BT BPF.stl);
  • A card stand tray (1 10 CardStands.stl).

(I printed the Badge and Token Trays with different colour text to distinguish the origins.  If you do not like the specific Badges Token Tray you could replace this with a generic tray (1 9v2 BTSmall.stl)).

The third layer is filled with:

  • The game board;
  • A dice tray (1 11 DiceTray.stl).

So, the first box was done.

The New Flight Plan was stored in three trays and a deck box;

  • A lower tray with the Aircraft and Tokens of two nations (1a 1 NFPLow.stl);
  • A middle tray with the Aircraft and Tokens of three nations (1a 2 NFPMid.stl);
  • A top tray with the stands and tokens (1a 3 NFPTop.stl);
  • A deck box for Air Combat and Winter Combat (1a 4 Deck2AirWinter.stl).

The three New Flight Plan Trays fit into the Spacer Tray in the base box;

The deck box fits into the spare deck box space or replaces the blank deck box in the base box.

So, then I had the Base Game and the New Flight Plan in the base box, and an empty box.

SECOND BOX

The first layer of the New Flight Plan box consists of (clockwise from top right):

  • Two Army Trays (2 1 ArmyTrayx2.stl) with artillery insets (2 2 ArtilleryLongx2.stl);
  • An Army Tray for the Japanese Army (2 3 JapTray.stl);
    • A separate insert for the Japanese Tanks (2 4 JapTank.stl)
  • Two Terrain Trays (2 5 Terrainx2.stl).

The second layer consists of:

  • A Badge and Token Tray for the Terrain Pack, Mediterranean Front, Eastern Front and Winter Wars (2 BT 6 TPMFEFWW.stl);
  • A Badge and Token Tray for the Command Book I, Command Book II, and Battle Maps. (2 7 BT CBICBIIKGTJD.stl) (Sorry this photo does not show this tray, my error, it shows another test print tray);

(I printed the Badge and Token Trays with different colour text to distinguish the origins.  If you do not like specific Badges Token Trays you could replace this with a generic trays (1 8 BTLarge.stl)).

The third layer is just big enough to store all the manuals from;

  • The Base Game;
  • The Terrain Pack;
  • Mediterranean Theatre;
  • Easter Front;
  • Pacific Theatre;
  • Equipment Pack;
  • Operation Overlord;
  • Winter Wars;
  • New Flight Plan.

So that left the Equipment Pack Box as the third box.

THIRD BOX

I started with a frame for organisation (3 1 Frame.stl) which requires a print area of 235mm x 250mm. I printed with an internal brim, and this remained on the print in the box.

Then came the drawers for all the miniatures from the Equipment Pack, the Battle Maps and the anti tank guns from Mediterranean Theatre.  I used the badges that come with the game to label the drawers.  I had to make a few badges that did not come with the game, but I ended up with:

  • 16 small drawers (3 2 D100x16.stl);
  • 4 medium drawers (3 3 D150x4.stl) (one of which I used to put the Overlord tokens in);
  • 1 long drawer (3 4 D200x1.stl);
  • 2 extra large drawers (3 5 D400x2.stl).

Then I printed deck boxes:

  • Two deck boxes for Overlord (3 6 DeckOverlordx2.stl) (These boxes are quite tight sleeved);
  • A deck box for Breakthrough (3 7 Deck Breakthrough.stl);
  • A deck box for Urban, Jungle and Desert Combat (3 8 Deck3UrbanJungleDesert.stl);

The top layer then has room for the Winter/Desert board or the base game board if the winter desert board ends up in the base game box.

MODULARARITY

There is some level of modularity.  If you only wanted to take one box, the Army boxes can be swapped around.  Terrain boxes can be swapped around.  Badges boxes can be swapped around.  Deck boxes can be swapped around. Boards can be swapped around.

Similarly, the layers can be moved around, for example if you do not use the card holders and the badges and tokens for the campaign books or battle maps, you could put those on the first layer of the second box, with the armies on top to make the things you use more accessible.

STORAGE CONCLUSION

I have heard that some people get the battle maps into the boxes, but the way mine were folded, they would not fit.

I ended up with three boxes containing:

  • The Base Game;
  • Eastern Front;
  • Pacific Theatre;
  • Operation Overlord.
  • The Terrain Pack;
  • Equipment Pack;
  • New Flight Plan;
  • Winter Wars;
  • Mediterranean Theatre;
  • Winter Desert Board.

And the miniatures, cards, badges, tokens and manuals from:

  • Tigers in the Snow;
  • Sword of Stalingrad;
  • Hedgerow Hell;
  • Battles of Khalkhin Gol;
  • Disaster at Dieppe;
  • Through the Jungle and Desert;
  • Campaign Book I;
  • Campaign Book II.

I store the Battle Maps and the Breakthrough Board outside the boxes, which leaves me with all my Memoir 44 stored in one Kalax cube, with space to fit another standard game box. I calculate this as a space saving of over 40%, and things are now more accessible.

This model was to solve my specific storage needs.

I hope you can get some benefit out of this model too.

If you do, please let me know.
