Use this spacer in conjunction with a a c-shape Magsafe ring to turn your Qi charger into a Magsafe/Qi 2 charger!
Build (In sandwich order)
- A c-Shape Magsafe ring.
- Can buy this for cheap off Amazon/Ebay/Temu/Aliexpress.
- Must be c-shaped to prevent tripping the QI charger's induction detection. Do not get an o-shaped ring!
- The 3D print!
- The depth of the spacer is 3mm. You may need to extrude it even more to accommodate larger camera bumps. (You can do this in your slicer!)
- 3mm works well on my iPhone 15 pro with an ESR case.
- Without the case, the camera bump does lightly touch the bottom surface as it's bigger than 3mm.
- Adhesive of your choice to adhere the print to your Qi charger.
- QI charger that you want to upgrade to Magsafe/Qi 2.
Backstory (Rant)
I found it frustrating that I couldn't consistently align my iPhone with the sweet spot on my IKEA NYMÅNE's Qi charger…. So, I had the brilliant idea of adding a Magsafe compatible ring to put onto the charger.
When I googled it, I was pleasantly surprised that other people wanted to do the same thing, but there were some issues.
1. There wasn't an off-the-shelf solution
- This was rather surprising. Feels like there should be a whole market for making Qi chargers Magsafe or Qi 2 compatible.
- The product simply doesn't exist or there aren't any products marketed for this.
2. I tried a few adapters online
- On the surface level, “Magsafe Wall Mount” listings were super promising. Unfortunately, the ones I tried kept on tripping the metal detection failsafe on my Qi charger.
- I also tried an o-shape Magsafe ring but turned out despite only being a thin sheet of metal, it also tripped the metal detection as it is a closed loop!
After much internet surfing and tinkering, I found that c-shape rings were the solution as they worked well with Magsafe and due to the opening, doesn't trip the metal detection of Qi wireless chargers.
The final problem I had to overcome is the camera bump on my iPhone. I couldn't simply stick the ring on the charger as my camera bump would create enough of a distance that there wouldn't be any magnetic force at all when placing my phone down.
Hence, this 3D model was born! It's simply an extrusion of the c-shape Magsafe ring.
(Note: Admittedly, it's not a perfect trace, but it's good enough for this application.)
