Another variation of a self defense stick or Kubotan. This one is ~140mm long and has an OD of 18mm. It has a rib on one side, which is mostly a concession to make the model printable in a horizontal orientation, but it's designed to be as minimal as possible and can actually provide some palm support. The grip spacing is designed to be comfortable for medium to medium-large hands for all common grip techniques (hammer, icepick, with or without choking up, with or without thumb on the back for point control). Has knurled surfaces on the rear end for some extra grip & drip.

If you want to remix, the .f3d file can be found in the files section.

There's four versions:

  • M5 on both ends: has provisions for an M5x35 bolt on the tip for reinforcement and to provide a hard strike surface, and another M5x35 thread on the back end either for an M5 eye bolt (so it can be attached to a keychain) or another M5x35 bolt to provide a second strike surface.
  • M5 on the tip: provisions for an M5x35 bolt on the tip, but a 5mm Ø hole for a keychain on the back end.
  • M5 on the rear: M5x35 thread on the back, printed tip up front.
  • No threads: 5mm Ø keychain hole in the back, printed tip up front.

Printing instructions:

  • Print with PETG, or similarly impact-resistant and flexible filaments. Do not print in PLA. PLA is brittle. It will shatter from high-force impacts, and you will injure yourself.
  • Print horizontally, with the rib on the build surface. Do not print vertically. The Kubotan will break from relatively light impacts if printed vertically.
  • Dry your filament. Wet filament can result in material failures (not necessarily visible on the outer surface) that can result in breakage.
  • No supports needed.
  • 100% infill, rectilinear. Less than 100% only if the Kubotan is intended purely as a decorative piece and will never see actual use.
  • 3-5 wall loops.
  • SuperTack build plate recommended, otherwise use a brim if there's adhesion issues.
  • .14-.16mm layer height recommended for better overhangs on the tip.
  • High cooling for overhangs, low outer wall speeds and overhang speeds.
  • Examples in the pictures are printed with fuzzy skin modifiers (.3mm distance, .25mm thickness) on the grip to get an anti-slip texture.
  • I recommend deburring the edges of the rib. If the rib annoys you, it can be completely cut away with a deburring tool with little effort.
  • These Kubotans are reasonably sturdy if printed properly, but they're not indestructible. “Regular” self defense use is very unlikely to result in failures, but abusive tests (e.g., striking 2x4s with full force) might. Wear gloves and eye protection if you intend to do abusive testing.

Obligatory disclaimer:

This is not a toy. Kubotans can cause lethal injury, and are illegal to own and/or carry in some jurisdictions. You are responsible for knowing your local laws and regulations. Don't bring this on airplanes. Don't do anything stupid with them. Take martial arts classes to learn how to use a Kubotan effectively.
