I'm a new owner of the prusa buddy3d cam, seems to me like the ugliest printer camera on planet. So after having some trouble to get it running, because my wifi password was too long for this peace of hardware, I did not found a nice solution to get this ugly part out of my eyes.
I tried first the prusa way, nothing to say about this placement at all, then I tried the mounting way of Fyrby. I tried really hard to get my upcoming eye cancer healed.
So I did run my first print a “wall mount” with my shiny new camera in my nice Prusa XL and I saw just nothing (ok, not truth, there is a yellow color (if not in night mode)):
I did not choose this place of the part there, this was my Prusa-Slicer with automatic placement. Seems to me, the slicer department does not work well together with the camera department by Prusa there.
But it is just understandable I would also ignore the camera department with this ugly piece of hardware, I would even vote for an office outsource.
Ok somebody can argue my part is just too small to monitor on this great webcam, so I made a picture with my smartphone:
Ohpss, that is pretty big, almost 340mm x 60mm
So before I will print the second one (I need two of them) I want to fix that camera position issue. After searching for the best place with my measuring slider, I just clearly realized, that the XL hardware department also do not really like the camera department…. can I blame them?
So thinking to fix first the eye cancer problem, will make an own case for that hardware, but before just look once again to the printables website and found someone like god, because he did this job already and he did it very well:
Holck with the camera redux mod
I did even print it with 0,20 detail profile and all fits great!
And the best on the redux conversion:
I left out the microphone. Yes there is a microphone inside, even motors to rotate the camera, to where? out of the printer?
I do not like any microphone in my rooms, hackable/controllable from outside.
And yes the rotation motors also not in the camera anymore. So it can only look in my printer, doesn't care me anymore, if somebody breaks in the camera firmware.
If you go with the "redux mod", please be carefully on main board disassemble: Never try to swing out the board on the SD card slot side, use the opposite side. If the camera neck will jam on the housing, push with you're finger against the lens module to help coming out.
So going again hunting with my measuring slider, choosing the top of the case (celling) and got a new inspiration: The XL hardware department don't like any camera, there is just not even one place that makes sense. Seems they did not think once to mount someday a camera. The Top of the printer has not enough place, not even for the "camera redux mod" and If I place the front and back part of the redux side by side, there is still not enough space. The camera board already is just too big. I hate the camera department.
So, last place I did found was outside and this mod here places the camera outside and uses the power from the printer
No need of any screw, just stick it together:
And now I did print my second wall mount and wow, there is surprisingly a first layer, and a second and a third and….
And with the great Prusa Smartphone APP you can zoom very nicely inside of the camera image:
After all, I like the position of the camera from the top view. Each image, even the PTFE tube is in front of the camera shows enought of the print.
The author remixed this model.
Just an extension, to give the camera a meaningful position.
