Lesson plan:
A recent analysis by the Staples finance department has concluded that sales for desktop organization products have declined in recent years. The company would like to ramp up their profits in this area by enhancing the aesthetic nature of these products.
Your group of two has been hired to design a set of theme-based organizational products. Your team will design a set of office supplies that are tied together with a common theme. You must be able to justify the theme that connects the products together. The idea is that the customer will not want to buy just one; they will want to buy the whole set.
Summary of our project:
I worked with Anwitha Alluri (Link) to create a set of 3 objects with the winter arc theme to fulfill the goal of making themed office supply holders. The 10cmx10cmx10cm restraints for each piece gave us a lot of creativity with this project. We ended up brainstorming a Prime bottle pencil holder, a Lunchly box pen/marker/eraser holder, and a Bench Press phone holder.
Bench Press Assembly Instructions:

Assemble plates in order like the real image onto the far ends of the barbell, then put the barbell with loaded weights onto the grooves at the top of the bench press model
DESIGN CHANGES:
Bench Press Bar:

Explanation: Originally, we brainstormed approximate dimensions we would need for a barbell; However, we ended up going with a sharper look for weight stoppers, and changed the radius slightly so that they would fit the plates.
Bench Press Plates:

Explanation: Not much change here, but because the bar's original plans were somewhat sloppy, we had to match the plate's inner circle dimensions so that they would fit nicely onto the bar.
Bench Press (Bench):

Explanation: This bench piece had a lot of changes made along the way. First, we weren’t too sure about how to go about the cut to fit a phone, we first thought of doing a small cut to just slightly hold a phone, but it was risky and didn’t fit different phones. Thus, we ended up opting for a massive cut through the middle of the bench, so that phones could lean in between against the half parts. Because of this cut change, we made the middle supports much larger to make sure they could support a heavy phone. We also had planned for the bench top part design as shown above, where the top is a rectangle larger than the lower rectangle. However, this led to fillet problems later on, and thus we went for just 2 equal-sized rectangles. Because of this, we could then fillet the entire bench which we hadn’t originally planned, but it looked nice.
Added Bench Press Piece:

Explanation: Our initial sketch for the bench press didn’t include too much forethought regarding the phone holding cut, so this feature was added during the Solidworks modeling process. Because we opted for a massive cut through the bench, I thought it may help to have these nubs as an extra way to keep phones propped up, in case their dimensions wouldn’t fit the first holding method. I also added a fillet to make it look nicer and less sharp.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
